Harry D Critchfield, formerly President of Oil Wells Renewal Company, with offices at 332 South Michigan Avenue, and recently an Oil Well Operator in Oklahoma, was killed yesterday afternoon (7 Aug 1925), when he stepped into an open elevator shaft in the Stevens Building and plunged 17 stories to the basement.
The police are convinced that the death was accidental. Critchfield had been a passenger on the ascending elevator and stepped out to allow others in the car to pass out. Mark Purdy, of 3716 Lake Park Avenue, the operator, started the car again before he re-entered it. Critchfield is believed to have walked into the open shaft without realizing that the elevator had gone up.
