Born on April 17, 1919 on Walnut Grove Plantation, Awendaw, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Horace Wells Leland and the late Ouida Vivien Tennent Leland.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Moncks Corner. She graduated from McClellanville High School where she played on its state championship girls basketball team. She was a volunteer for the Red Cross, served on many PTA boards, and was an active member of the Retired Officers Wives Club. She and her late husband lived in many locations as part of his military service, including Munich, Stuttgart, and Frankfurt, Germany, as well as North Carolina South Caroline, Maryland, and Illinois, before retiring to Jacksonville Beach, Florida. Upon her husband’s death, Mrs. Johnson moved to their summer home in Crossnore, North Carolina, and finally to South Carolina to be near family.
Surviving are her four children: Newbern W. Johnson (Lisa), Gainesville, Florida; Mary J. Nettles (Steve) of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, John D. Johnson, Gainesville, Florida, and Susan J. Meehan (Steve) of Tybee Island, Georgia. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Jay Nettles, Chris Nettles, Jessica Richardson, Martin Johnson (Toshiko), Tyler Meehan, Kyle Johnson, Patrick Meehan, and Emma Kate Meehan. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Maci Nettles, Amber Nettles, Richard Nettles, Maya Johnson, Ewan Johnson, and Noah Johnson.
