Norbert C. Murphy, 84, passed away on a Tuesday morning, at home.

He was the son of John and Merceda (Middlebrook) Murphy.

Norbert graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1949 and then attended St. Norbert College for one year.

He then entered the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, serving from Jan. 3, 1951, to Dec. 13, 1954, spending one year in French Morocco being honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class.

Norbert then attended Northern Michigan University graduating in 1958 as class president with a bachelor of arts degree. He then taught social studies in West Branch, Mich., from 1958 to 1964, Bark River-Harris from 1964 to 1966, and then Escanaba Area Public Schools until his retirement in 1987.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church since 1968, a member of the Escanaba Lions Club, a past Lecturing Knight of the Escanaba Elks Lodge 354, a former Delta County Democratic Party chairman from 1968 to 1970, an Escanaba city councilman from 1972 to 1976, a member of Northern Michigan University Alumni Association National Board of Directors and a recipient of an Alumni Service Award from Northern Michigan University in 1984.

He was survived by: sister, Merceda Druding, as well as many loving nieces and nephews, Sandy, Susie, Sharon, Mary, Diane, Mike and John.

Norbert was preceded in death by: parents and a brother, Kevill Murphy.

Visitation at the Allo Coolman Funeral Home with Delta County Veterans Council rites, parish prayers and a family remembrance time. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph & St. Patrick Parish with Fr. Eric Olson officiating. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery.
