Robert James Lyon was born on May 15, 1876, in Georgetown, Pennsylvania, one of 9 children of Samuel and Louisa Long Lyon. He was of 100% English descent. Robert attended school through the 9th grade.
Of the 9 children, 6 were living in 1900. In 1900, at age 24, Robert was living at 529 Winebiddle Avenue, in the Bloomfield section of Pittsburgh, with his widowed mother Louisa (57) , sister Louisa Genevra (33), and brother Samuel Connley (25).
Robert was a fireman for the City of Pittsburgh. At age 33, his residence was 301 Beltzhoover Avenue in the southern part of the city of Pittsburgh.
Robert married Katherine Nora McQuillan, on August 3, 1909, in Bellevue, Pennsylvania, just slightly northwest of Pittsburgh. They were longtime residents of 107 Kathleen St., in the Mt. Washington neighborhood of the South Hills of Pittsburgh. They owned their home.
Robert remained a City of Pittsburgh Fireman. In 1918, he was listed as working at 331 First Ave. In January, 1917, an extensive fire started Downtown in the basement of the Frank & Seder Building at 2 a.m. By 4:15 a.m., windows in Kaufmann's Department Store were broken by the intense heat.
From the front page of the January 27, 1917, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
"Engine Driver Robert J. Lyon of #30 Company was severely cut on the head by glass while working in the rear of the building. He continued to fight the fire for 15 minutes before realizing he was injured, and was on the verge of collapse when his condition was noticed. He was attended by Dr. D. E. Sable, police and fire surgeon."
Robert retired from the Fire Department by age 65. At age 65, his physical characteristics were listed as:

Robert was a member of St. Justin Catholic Church at 539 Boggs Avenue in Mt. Washington.
Robert James Lyon died at home at 107 Kathleen Street in Mt. Washington at the age of 69 years, 7 months, and 23 days. The cause of death was Congestive heart failure, due to arteriosclerotic heart disease.
Robert is survived by his wife Katherine Nora Lyon, son Robert Bernard Lyon, daughter Catherine Louise Marvin, and sister Lavina St. Clair. He was predeceased by his parents and remaining siblings.
Arrangements and Visitation were by William Slater and Sons Funeral Home, Virginia Avenue, Mount Washington. A Requiem High Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Justin Catholic Church, Mount Washington, with Father J. B. Barry as the celebrant.
