SMITH Wilbur Alan (Wib) died April 9, 2016, at home with his family and under the tender care of Hospice and the loving staff at Kendal of Granville. He was born in Peoria, Illinois August 2, 1927. He attended the Columbus Academy all twelve years (1945), Oberlin College (1951) and The Ohio State University (1956). He served during WWII in the US Navy (honorable discharge July 1946). He worked at Battelle Memorial Institute for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his gracious and loving wife Louise Purinton Smith, parents Wilbur A. Smith and Lelia Timberman Smith Fenton Harding and beloved stepfather Gerald Battelle Fenton. Also by grandchildren Katharine Miller and Adriane Timberman Miller and son-in-law Roland Witmer Miller, III. Also preceded by sister Eleanor (Ellie) Fenton Hanks. He is survived by his children, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All of the foregoing loved him as he did them. He was active in the Columbus Academy, Castalia Trout Club, First Congregational Church, Rocky Fork Hunt and Country Club, Jefferson Township Zoning Commission, United Way, Board of OSU Harding Hospital, Hospice related volunteer work, and the Blackcats. Wib was proud to donate gallons of blood to the Red Cross throughout his adult life. In the summer months he loved spending time with his family at their cabin in Caratunk, Maine and taught scores of young children how to water-ski on Pleasant Pond. A memorial service will be held for Wib at The First Congregational Church, 444 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215, on Thursday, April 14 at 1:00pm. Friends may visit with family prior to the service on from 11:30-12:45pm, at the Church. A short reception will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in memory of Wib to The First Congregational Church, 444 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 or Columbus Museum of Art 480 East Broad St, Columbus, OH 43215 or a charity of your choice.
