Ferdinand H. Hachez was born 20 September 1818 in Celle, Hannover, Germany, to Johann Ferdinand Dominikus Hachez and Hermine Constanze Detmers, and was raised in Bremen as part of the Hachez merchant family with roots in Belgium.

He married Louise, and they had a son Ferdinand Hachez born 10 April 1848 in Holstein, Germany. The elder Ferdinand farmed near Bremen, then managed estates in Holstein and Mecklenburg, according to his obituary published in Minnesota.

He and his family sailed to America from Bremen to New York on the ship Robert, arriving 4 August 1854 and traveling to New Holstein, Wisconsin, a German-speaking farming community. The family had a farm two miles northeast of New Holstein village.

Father and son were both members of the New Holstein Turnverin or Turners group. F. Hachez Sr. was president, and F. Hachez, secretary, of the German Agricultural Society in New Holstein, and the elder Ferdinand helped found the Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Wisconsin.

Wife Louise died sometime before 1870, and son Ferdinand married Eliese Boie in 1869 and chose to operate a tavern in town. The elder Ferdinand then moved to another German-speaking community, New Ulm, Minnesota, about 1872. When a woman he was wooing refused his proposal of marriage, he took his own life on 10 August 1874. He was buried the next day with a great following to the cemetery, the Turnverin showing last honors since he had been a member in good standing, his obituary says.

He is buried in New Ulm's Old Cemetery, Tract E Place 26, a part of the New Ulm Cemetery, according to the Brown County Historical Society. An obituary was published in the New Ulm newspaper, either the Post or Herald, as well as papers in Chilton, Wisconsin, and Chicago.

Notes: A FindaGrave Memorial #45350887 for him in the New Holstein City Cemetery is based on a small stone for his grandson of that name who died young, and so is in error. It does have an obituary for him published in Chilton, Wisconsin. Son Ferdinand, FindaGraveMemorial # 38828025, always stated he was born in Holstein, but his obituary says Alsace-Lorraine, apparently in error.
