Richard Evelyn Byrd Flanigan, age 81, of Walkersville, died peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at his home.
Born October 23, 1934, near Woodsboro, he was the son of the late Allen L. and Evelyn L. Cashour Flanigan. After his mother's death, at an early age he was raised by his father, grandparents, and a special aunt, Aunt Edith.
He was the husband of Grace E. Flanigan, his wife of 60 years.
Mr. Flanigan was a 1952 graduate of Walkersville High School, where he was very active in sports and FFA. After graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corp and served for 3 years. He was formerly employed with the Frederick News Post, retiring after 30 years.
He was a lifelong and active member of Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed, and on November 9, 1955 married Grace E. Gladhill. He also served as a councilman and on the property team, and in 1966 he refinished all the church pews. He was an inactive member of the Glen W. Eyler Post American Legion, Woodsboro; and a member of the Marine Corp of Frederick and Heart Exercise at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Flanigan and his wife enjoyed traveling, having visited 46 states. He enjoyed many bus trips with the Urbana Travel Club and camping trips with Barb and Jim.
He was blessed with a daughter, Teresa and she married Roger Myers Jr. He is loved by three grandchildren, Megan and husband, Collin Kenny; Kathryn and husband, Dan Smith; and Matthew and friend, Emily. Both granddaughters are expecting this summer. He and Grace enjoyed many trips with Teresa, Roger and the grandchildren.
Also surviving are his brother, Tom Flanigan and wife, Sherry; and sister, Daphne Wacther and husband, Carroll. He enjoyed spending time with Grace's family, playing cards and picnicking with them. He was predeceased by a brother, Allen L. Flanigan.
He will be remembered by special friends, Bob and Lois Humphrey and his church family.
Mr. Flanigan's family would like to thank Drs. Gough and Buki, Visiting Angels, and Hospice of Frederick County, for their care.
The family will receive friends at Hartzler Funeral Home, 404 S. Main St., Woodsboro, on Tuesday, April 12 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at 2 p.m. in Utica Cemetery, 10619 Old Frederick Road, Thurmont. Rev. Kathryn A. Rohrbach, his pastor, will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodsboro Evangelical Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 27, Woodsboro, MD 21798.
