Remembrance Speech given by daughter Janet Bloom at time of Service.

As most of you know, my mother was ill for a number of years. Unfortunately, we had to watch her fade away slowly. It was difficult for all of us.

I choose to remember my Mother before she became ill. One of my fondest memories is a Christmas back in the late 60's. My father was on strike and money was very tight. Somehow, my mother made that Christmas the best ever. At the time, I loved playing with Barbie dolls. I don't know when she found the time, but she sewed quite a few outfits for my dolls. She even made Barbie a fake fur before it was chic to be anti-fur. She also hand-made beds for Barbie with headboards, pillows and duvets. I was thrilled. As I got older, I realized what a task this must have been for her. She was not going to let the strike ruin our Christmas.

My mother did not work outside the home so she would always have lunch ready for us when we would come home from school. (That was when children got to go home for lunch.) I felt sorry for the kids that had to stay at school for lunch because their mothers worked outside the home. I would run through the door and my lunch would be ready and she would be smiling.
She also gave me and my sisters, especially me, a love for old movies. She would tell us all about the movie stars like Myrna Loy, Rita Hayworth and Tyrone Power. She made it all sound so glamorous. To this day, I love to watch old movies. There is nothing better.
My mother was still funny almost until the end. She would always ask us, "What am I supposed to do?" all day long. She just was not used to sitting and doing nothing. All her life, she cooked, baked, cleaned and did laundry, etc. Then one day, she just couldn't do it anymore. When she would ask us what she should do, we would sometimes tell her to go shovel the snow or go pick weeds in the yard. Her response would be "Don't' get smart".
I am so happy that her suffering is over. She was a great Mom and I will miss her terribly.
