She was born in Detroit Oct. 18, 1925, the daughter of John Arthur and Mabel Bessie (Kitley) Towlerton. She spent summers at Higgins Lake since 1953 and moved to the lake in 1986, from Garden City.

She and Joseph Hankinson were united in marriage June 7, 1947, in Detroit. He preceded her in death April 7, 2006.

Mrs. Hankinson would say that her greatest job in the world was being a mom. She also worked for several retailers, including Montgomery Ward, J.L. Hudson and Hi-Lo TV. She was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth Episcopal Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Joseph; sister, Mabel Callender; a granddaughter; and a great-grandson.

Surviving Mrs. Hankinson are her four children, Susan (David) Zenz of Jackson, Thomas (Lori) Hankinson of Higgins Lake, Janice (Thomas) Waldron of Garden City and David (Kathy) Hankinson of Jackson; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur (Mickey) Towlerton of Alpena; sister, Alice (Dan) Hoppe of Alpena; sister-in-law, Ann (Thomas) Matthewson of Higgins Lake; and many nieces and nephews.
