Alfred was the son of Ethel B. Lanier and Georgia McIntosh Lanier. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II on the European front. After the war, he met and married the love of his life, Mary Ann Heintz, on July 8, 1948, in Weatherford, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1996; daughter, Barbara Connally; two brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include a son, Donald Barrett and wife, Sylvia, of Lacy Lakeview; sister, Dorothy Simons and husband, Jim, of N.J.; grandchildren, Wayne and Dawn Connally, Gayla and David Milhoan, Christy and Mike Mashburn, all of the Waco-Bellmead area and Jeannie and Wayne Koerth, of Sachse, Texas; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
