John Lacey, of Pioneer Family, Dies
John William Lacey, descendant of a pioneer Upper East Tennessee family, died last night at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Dr. and Mrs. J. Floyd Morrow, 1115 Montview Drive.
Mr. Lacey, 94, had suffered from cancer for about three years. He had lived with the Morrows most of the time since the death of Mrs. Lacey in 1961. He was a retired Fulton Sylphon employee.
He was a great-great-grandson of Philemon Lacey, who settled in the Denis Cove section of what is now Carter County in 1785. The family operated the only grist mill and sawmill in the area for many years.
He married Maude Tipton, a member of another early family in the region. She was a descendant of Col. John Tipton, who lives in history partly as a result of his clash with John Sevier. The early Tiptons owned much of the land in the area of the present Elizabethton.
Mr. Lacey also leaves two sons, Maj. Gen. J. K. Lacey, retired, San Antonio, Tex., and John William Lacey Jr., Knoxville, and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the home.
The family suggested memorial gifts may be made to the First Christian Church Library Fund.
