Billie “Sue” Calvery Preston, long-time resident of Brownwood, was surrounded by her family when she passed away on April 4, 2016 at the age of 78.
Born June 20, 1937 in Falls City, Sue was the daughter of Edwin Walker and Ruby Lee Calvery, and older sister to Edwin Lee Calvery. She graduated high school then earned her beautician license in Waco, where she met her husband Gene Wells Preston Sr. They married Oct. 25, 1956 and had two sons, Buddy and Dobie. In 1978, they moved to Brownwood and opened The Hickory Stick BBQ on Stephen F. Austin. Sue’s delicious recipes, and perfectly cooked menu was a favorite for many Brownwood residents for 19 years. Her smiling face, welcoming arms, contagious laugh, and amazing BBQ was what her customers became accustomed to over the years. In addition to cooking for family, friends and strangers, Sue volunteered on the Child Welfare Board, worked at 4Corners in downtown Brownwood, and during her leisure time, she painted and did arts and crafts every chance she got. If all of that was not enough, she always saved time for those that needed a little assistance, guidance and mentoring. She blessed many lives over the years and her friends were for life.
Sue is survived by her sons and their wives, Buddy (Cheri) and Dobie (Vickie), both of Brownwood; her grandchildren and their spouses, Ami (John) Moody of Zephyr, Amber Langley and Hattie Tignor of Brownwood, Angie (Marcus) McShan of Ponder, Sarah (Jayme) Bowman of Brownwood, Greg Preston of Cleburne, Taylor (Ashley) Preston of Brownwood and Michael Livingston of Brownwood. She was blessed with 13 great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Abby Moody, Alyssa Preston, Xana Hammonds, Xaden Tignor, Theron and Addyson Bowman, Mason and Paisley McShan, Emerie and Jaxson Preston, Emily Escobar and one great-grandchild on the way. She is survived by niece Shawn (the late David) Glenn of Midland, Kevin Calvery of Powell, and Kasey (Jillian) Calvery of Copperas Cove, as well as special friends Jim and Jane Ketcham of Lake Brownwood. Aunt Sue was loved by all of her family including many great nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Ruby Calvery; brother, Edwin Lee Calvery; Baby Boy Preston; and her husband, Gene Preston.
