Francis Leofric Armstrong was born at Mount Perry in the North Burnett Region of Queensland, Australia on 25 October 1880. His parents were Octavius Armstrong (1834–1917) and Jessie Augusta Armstrong (1843–1917). He attended Brisbane Grammar School in Queensland. Francis served during the South African War (Second Anglo-Boer War). He worked as a bank clerk and married Annie Endeavour Munro Mackay on 1 June 1914. Francis enlisted to serve during World War I on 19 October 1914. He served with the Australian Imperial Force, 15th Australian Infantry Battalion. His son Francis Mackay Armstrong (1915-2002) was born on 22 February 1915 at Kangaroo Point. Francis was killed in action at Quinn's Post in Gallipoli on 10 May 1915 and laid to rest the same day at Quinn's Post Cemetery. He was twice mentioned in despatches for his conduct at Gallipoli and was posthumously awarded the "Victory" medal in 1922. Annie remarried to Robert McEachran Montgomery in 1918.
