Daniel was the son of Miles and Harriett Benfield. married Cynthia Augusta Moose in 1880, they were the parents of eight children: Mary Jane, Robert Linnie, Rose L., Archibald Chalmes, Barbara Rebecca, Neriah McCubbins, Roland David and Minnie Rose Mae. He married Candace Lillian "Lillie" Sherrill, in 1924.
