FUNERAL FOR M. W. McMURRY HELD THURSDAY

Funeral services for M. W. McMurry, 93, Civil War Veteran, early day Indian scout, and from 1906 to 1923 a farmer near Roscoe, were held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Presbyterian Church at Roscoe. Mr. McMurry died at his home in Abilene Wednesday evening after a short illness.

Funeral services were conducted by Dr. S. T. Knox, Abilene minister, and interment was made under the direction of the Roscoe Masonic Lodge of which Mr. McMurry was a member. He had been a Mason for more than 50 years.

Born in Hayward County, Tennessee on October 1, 1840, Mr. McMurry was brought to Texas as a small baby by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. McMurry. The family settled in the Washington district, which later became Burleson County when the state was organized.

After serving as an Indian Scout under Captain Erath, Mr. McMurry joined the Confederate Army and saw service in Louisiana during the Civil War. He was married to Miss Margaret Jane Wilkerson on April 25, 1875. In 1906 they moved to Nolan County and farmed west of Roscoe until 1923 when they moved to Abilene. Mrs. McMurry died five years ago.

Mr. McMurry is survived three daughters, Mrs. Asa Chappell of Dallas, Mrs. A. C. Pratt and Mrs. I. W. Hughes of Abilene; a brother, Rev. S. J. McMurry of Barstow; and a granddaughter, Mrs. J. C. Cotten of Wink; and one nephew, Allen McMurry of Roscoe.
