Mary Katherine Alberts Duncan was born in Germany and came to Texas with her family at the age of four. She married John Floyd Duncan in Wylie, Texas, on Nov. 24, 1894. She was a teacher in the Sunday School of the Missionary Baptist Church in Roscoe, Texas, for 25 years. She was a pioneer woman who was always willing to help a neighbor or those in need. She died Nov. 6, 1940 at the age of 68.

She kept a big wooden keg or barrel of sauerkraut fermenting in her cellar at all times. Her son, Everett, always said it was the best sauerkraut in the world.

My grandmother, her daughter-in-law, didn't get along too terribly well with her. Of course, they were both very well-mannered ladies of their time, and were always very civil with each other. I just remember my grandmother telling me that Mary Katherine often encouraged her children to compete against each other, resulting in some unhealthy sibling rivalry. She didn't agree with that style of child-rearing, but of course, she was the younger generation at that time.
