Body of Mrs. Lucille Baker Found in Car Near San Jacinto River; Had Been Unable to Find Work
A suicide verdict was rendered by Justice Campbell Overstreet following an investigation into the death of Mrs. Lucille M. Baker, 35, of 1415 Scott, whose body was found slumped over in an automobile in the San Jacinto River bottom near Magnolia Gardens late Monday.
Justice Overstreet fixed the time of death at late Thursday.
There was a bullet wound in her left temple and a .38-caliber revolver lay on the seat beside her.
Mrs. C. E. Pontius, at the Scott Street address, with whom Mrs. Baker and her 15-year-old son, Wayland Whittington were boarding, told The Chronicle that Mrs. Baker left home about 5 p.m. Thursday.
"She said she was going to Bryan and then to Dallas in search of work. 'I'll be back in a week,' she said when she left," Mrs. Pontius said.
"She was a stenographer and told me when she and her son came here from Abilene about three weeks ago that she had been without work for two years," Mrs. Pontius said. "She was in bad health and seemed greatly worried all the time over her inability to obtain work."
"She said she had a job waiting for her in Dallas but didn't tell her son."
Deputy Sheriffs Joe Trapollino and George Andrew, with Investigator R. R. Myers made an investigation.
The body was found by Charles Pace of the Riverside Lodge nearby, who had noticed the car, a coupe, parked just off the road near the Winter Garden Saturday. Upon seeing the car parked on the same spot Monday, Pace summoned H. P. Guinn, manager of the Magnolia Gardens.
In a suitcase in the rumble seat of the automobile, officers found a note marked, "For Wayland," which said, "Darling, mother didn't get a job. You be sweet and go on and finish school. Keep my watch and always remember I love you." It was not signed.
Pinned on the note were two $1 bills and in the envelope with it was the wrist watch.
A black purse on the seat of the car beside the dead woman contained a small amount of money.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Fogle-West Company.
