ALLEN William Chandler Allen, Colonel, USAF (ret); age 79, of Marietta, died Sunday, September 19. 1999. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Thursday, September 23, 1999 at the family home. An Atlanta native, Col. Allen graduated from Boys High School in 1937 and attended the University of Georgia where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. After three years he joined the Army Air Corps on January 1, 1941 to fly. On the day Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, he was a 2nd Lieutenant serving as a flight instructor at Kelly Field, Texas. From there he went into combat in Europe flying missions in B-25 bombers and soon was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel at 24 years of age commanding the 719th Bomb Squadron of the 449th Bomb Group. He was shot down twice-over Yugoslavia and Northern Italy and each time evaded the enemy and returned to his combat unit to fly again. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and accumulated over 9,000 hours flying time in numerous aircraft. He was promoted to Colonel after the war, later served as Base Commander in Athens, Greece and retired at Dobbins AFB in Marietta after serving his country for 21 years. He remained in Marietta and founded New South Realty, Inc. serving as its broker and president. He was active in home construction and the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce. He has resided in Marietta for 40 years. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, two sons, two daughters, eleven grandchildren, and nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends after the memorial service at the family home.
