Betty Biggs 84, of Elgin, OK, left us to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and other dearly departed friends and family on March 30, 2016. Betty Jo was born to Vernie Lee and Sara Ellie Brown January 14, 1932 in Cyril Oklahoma where she lived, graduated High School and married Charles William Biggs of Fletcher in 1952. After she and Charles raised their two sons, Craig and Ricky, Betty went on to receive her Bachelors Degree in Education from the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in Chickasha in 1972. After her student teaching Betty and Charles moved to Elgin where she took a position with the Elgin Public School system as a Special Education Reading teacher at the high school in 1974. Betty may be best remembered as the beloved ‘Mrs. Biggs’ or ‘Grandma Biggs’ to hundreds of students. She was voted Teacher of the Year in 1993. Mrs. Biggs was an avid Elgin sports fan traveling the state to cheer her students on wherever they may have gone. As senior sponsor for 11 years, (1975, ’77, ’78, ’79, ’80, ’81, ’82, ’83, ’84, ’88 and 1994) she kept her seniors on task and supported to ensure they all had the best senior year experience possible. Still to this day wherever ‘Mrs. Biggs’ went she was sure to run into an appreciative student or student family member who remembered her well. Betty made sure ALL her students knew they were loved and cared for and she did everything in her power to help them succeed.
Betty’s devotion to her husband, Charles and her family has been a shining example of a truly godly woman. In all of their years together, Charles can’t ever remember Betty having a negative word to say towards anyone and her loving attitude showed wherever she went. Whether Betty was with family, friends, students, colleagues or her ‘Ya-Ya’ Girlfriends, Betty was sure to bring joy and laughter to every event!
Her signature gift of joy, showed through her smiling, laughter and joking in spite of the many health challenges she faced. Betty from the age of a young girl overcame physical pain and emotional challenges through her faith and incredible fun sense of humor. She remains an inspiration to a myriad of people even to this day!
Married for 64 years, Betty is survived by her husband Charles Biggs; sons and wives, Craig and Kathy Biggs of Elgin, Ricky and Diane Biggs of Lawton; grandchildren and spouses Tanner and Kaci Biggs, Tayler and Daniel Reynolds and Caitlin Biggs, Rhiannon Biggs, Steven and Kristie Bolan; great grandchildren Kennedy Biggs, Drydin Reynolds, Talan Reynolds, Cadeon Biggs, Gavin Bolan, Hallye Bolan and Haggen Bolan. Also her sister Doris Kemp of Cyril, brother Lavonne and wife Norma Brown of Norman, and brother Venson and wife Sam Brown of Bangkok.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents Vernie and Ellie Brown, Sister Roseva Halphen and grandson Andy Bolan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Cyril with Pastor Donny Crittendon officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cyril Funeral Home.
