After 95 years of a life well lived…….Dwight Gilbert Egbert passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, in his home surrounded by family. Born on November 14, 1920 in Ness City, Ks; Gilbert grew up in Dighton, Ks and was a proud graduate of Dighton High School, Class of 1938. Typical of the "Greatest Generation", he was raised during the depression and the dust bowl years, served his country in WWII, finished college on the GI bill and came back home to raise a family. He met the love of his life, Phyllis Snyder, the "most beautiful girl on campus" at the University of Colorado, where they were both students. They would have been married 71 years in May.

Gilbert originally attended the University of Kansas as member of the freshman football team before transferring to the University of Colorado on a football scholarship. He suffered a career ending shoulder injury his sophomore year. After Pearl Harbor, Gilbert joined the US Navy, where he served almost 3 years in the South Pacific as a pharmacist mate aboard the USS Minneapolis, a heavy cruiser. Following his completion of service, he returned to University of Colorado to finish his Pharmacy degree. He and Phyllis moved to Dighton to take over the Egbert Rexall Drug Store, which had been owned and operated by his father since 1923.

The Drug store soda fountain was a hangout for kids stopping by on their way home from school and adults shopping the Rexall 1 cent sale or waiting to pick up their prescriptions. He liked to open the store on Sunday morning for a few hours where often hard working farmers would stop in for a cup of coffee and a discussion of the weather. It wasn't unusual for him to open the store on a Sunday or a holiday for a sick child in need of medicine or maybe a family who had forgotten to pick up film for their Christmas pictures. Many Dighton kids, including his own children, had their first real job at the Dighton Drug Store.

Gilbert served as President of the Kansas Pharmacists Association. He was a member of the Dighton City Council and Dighton Chamber of Commerce, serving as President. He was an active member and President of the Dighton Rotary and was a Rotarian Paul Harris Fellow. Gilbert was a proud member of American Legion 190 for 65 years. He was a member of the Dighton Christian Church and a big booster of all things Dighton. He was immensely proud of his little Western Kansas town. One of his proudest accomplishments was his efforts in bringing the swimming pool to Dighton in the 1950s. Long after his own kids had moved, he continued to attend the numerous high school sporting events. In addition to the drug store, he also owned and ran the Allen Travel Agency. This venture afforded him the opportunity to travel to interesting places including foreign countries and satisfy his curiosity of different people and cultures. He loved preparing slide show presentations of his travels for Rotary or other events in need of a speaker. A little known fact is he advertised the travel agency on TV during the first Super Bowl. Additionally, he was part of the original group of founding owners that built and developed the Lane County Feeders.

He and Phyllis owned and ran the store until 1985, when he retired. For the next 30 years they enjoyed traveling around the United States on a quest to fill in the blanks on their family trees, see as many wonderful National Parks and beautiful sites this great country has to offer and visit the kids and their families in the different states where they had settled.

He was preceded in death by his parents to whom he was devoted; Dwight G Egbert and Edna S Egbert; his brother, Galen S Egbert and son, Barry Gilbert Egbert. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Snyder) Egbert; daughters Nancy Egbert of Boulder CO; Tracey Brundrett (Lawrence) of Canyon Lake TX; sons Douglas Egbert (Mary) of Jacksonville IL and David Egbert of Tulsa OK; Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, Allison Egbert, Taylor Egbert, Ryan Brundrett, TJ Tobin and Rilie Tobin; and many nieces and nephews on both the Egbert and Snyder sides of the family.

The family requests you consider donations to the Lane County Historical Society and Museum, St Catherine's Hospice of Garden City, First Christian Church of Dighton or a charity of your choice.

Funeral service will be 10:30 am, Saturday, April 2, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Dighton with Rev. Aerii Smith and Paster Alana Chapman officiating. Burial will follow at Dighton Memorial Cemetery. There will be no public visitation.
