John's parents both died while John was very young. He was raised in part by his maternal grandmother.
John served as a Private in Company K of the 125th Illinois Infantry from February of 1864 to June of 1865; and then in the 60th Illinois Infantry from June of 1865 to July of 1865.
After the war, John engaged in coal mining, which was very prevalent in the Vermilion County area. He married Lucy Cotton on March 23, 1884, in Vermilion County. John and Lucy were the parents of five children., only two of whom reached adulthood. John and Lucy moved to Washington sometime between 1900 and 1909.
In his military records, John was described as being 5'5" tall, with blue eyes, light hair, and fair complexion.
