Mr. Kenneth Fred Voogd, 85, of Shamrock Gardens Assisted Living, South Bend, and formerly of South Bend, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Aplington, Iowa, to Fred and Neva (Stockdale) Voogd, and had lived in South Bend since 1947, coming from Washington, D.C.
Mr. Voogd had worked at Studebaker Corp. as a computer programmer from 1947 until the plant closed. He then worked for South Bend School City until his retirement in 1982. In the 1940s, he worked for the Veteran?s Administration in Washington, D.C. In his younger years he loved playing softball and basketball, and later enjoyed watching them. He was an avid bowler for many years. He liked to read, collect stamps and coins and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
On April 24, 1939, in Grinnel, Iowa, he married Edith Cuvelier, who died in 1999.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; one daughter, Patricia F. Lindeman; one infant son, Philip Allen; and one brother, Richard C.
Surviving are two daughters, Kay (Donald) Perry of Niles, Mich., and Candace (Leonard) Gonzales of LaPorte; two sons, Terrence (Carolyn) of Hartford, Mich., and Robert (Luana) of South Bend; 17 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. LaPorte County time at Kaniewski Funeral Home, Bendix Drive, South Bend. Friends may call Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. LaPorte County time.
