Gordon Edward Bennett, 82. On May 20, 2014 in Las Vegas, NV the divine angels called our beloved brother and father home.
He was born February 16, 1932 in Hiram, OH to Gerald and Mildred (Leach) Bennett. He graduated with a BA in Math from Hiram College in 1956 and a masters in Mathematic from Bowling Green State University in 1963. He was a gifted mathematician, teacher, artist, and adventurer.
He loved the west and spent many happy years in Dillon, MT where he taught Math at Western Montana College (1964-1979) During those years he was especially proud of two publications one: "The Discovery of a Generalization: An Example in Problem Solving" - The College Mathematics Journal, Vol. 10, No. 2, (1979), pp. 100-106, for which he received the George Pólya Award (1980) and Multiple Triangle Inequalities was published in a Yugoslavian Math Journal (1977).
He moved to southern California where he continued to teach at the High School and College level and pursue his interest in art. In 1991, he began teaching math at Key West Community College in FL. In 1995 he was awarded Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
After retirement he enjoyed traveling and visiting family across the US before finally settling in Las Vegas, NV where he found deep contentment living simply. His mind was sharp, he was witty, and he laughed easily. He found great delight in his daily trips to the Henderson Senior Center, Las Vegas, NV and was loved by members there. He died doing what he loved with his dignity, independence, and freedom.
He leaves to cherish his memory his two devoted children, four grandchildren. He also leaves two sisters along with nieces, nephews and many friends.
A memorial service will be held June 28 in Elk Horn, Montana.
As a tribute to his independent spirit and the role that the Henderson Senior Center played in helping him and so many seniors remain independent the family requests that any donations be made to Black Mountain Nutrition, Attn. Anita Gant, 300 South Race Track, Henderson, NV 89015.
