The Rev. Cecil Melton Platt of Lexington, a retired minister, teacher and cabinetmaker, died Tuesday at his home after a long illness. He was 78. The husband of Bessie Whalen Platt, he had been a minister at the First Christian Church in Lexington. He also had been a minister in churches in Paintsville, Franklin, Fleming and Jessamine counties and several Indiana towns.
Platt, a native of Harrison County, also taught restoration history and New Testament Greek at Lexington Christian Bible College and the University of Kentucky. He also was an accomplished custom cabinetmaker. He operated Platt's Cabinet and Kitchen Service for about 19 years, retiring in 1967. He graduated from Kentucky Christian College, in Grayson, and did postgraduate work at Cincinnati Bible Seminary and Butler University School of Religion, in Indianapolis.
He is survived by: a daughter, Cecilia Williams, of Lexington; a brother, Melvin C. Platt, of Walton; three sisters, Gertie Layton, Lou Ann Ingram and Christine Ingram, all of Cynthiana; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Aaron A. Smith Funeral Home. Masonic services will be at 8:00 p.m. today. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or Kentucky Christian College, in Grayson. Burial will be at Battle Grove Cemetery, in Cynthiana.
