William moved from Milford, CT to Ohio then to Batesville, Indiana abt 1868. He became Justice of the Peace in the early days and served in that capacity for many years, elected again when he returned in 1895 after his marriage to Marilla. He was known as "Squire Stowe". His first wife, Anna Eliza Ingersoll died in 1887 and he later married Marilla Sherood Smith Flowers. He is buried with his first wife. He served in the Civil War as a corporal in Co. D. 5th Ohio Cavalry, headquartered just outside Cincinnati. He was an active member of the August Willich Post of the GAR. He was a Mason.
