E.S. Keithley Rites Slated for Friday
Funeral services for Everard S. Keithley will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the Law Mortuary. Bishop Richard Savio will officiate. Burial will be in Crystal Valley Cemetery with Thomas E. Keithley, Robert M. Binci, Charles R. Edmundson, Allen Anderson, Charles Mattox and Bennie Dowda serving as pallbearers. Mr. Keithley died Wednesday at his home, 102 Crystal Park Road, Manitou Springs, at 84. He was born Dec. 3, 1888 in Ashley, Mo., and came her ein 1922 from Denver. He served in the Forest Service for many years and was supervisor of the Pike National Forest for 24 years. Mr. Keithley was responsible for the building of the Rampart Range Road. He was known as "The Area Tree Planter" and because of this was written up in many publications.
During his many years with the Forest Service, he planted or supervised the planting of 30 million evergreens, a feat which he considered his personal monument. He was in charge of the reforestation of the slopes of Pikes Peak, the Mount Herman burn near Palmer Lake and large areas of the South Platte watershed. Mr. Keithley also was the originator of the red tag used on all Christmas trees cut from national forests, an idea born in 1920 when he made the first sale of Yuletide trees from national forests. The use of the red tag indicated that the tree had been properly cut. During his long Forest Service career, he worked on the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota, the Huron National Forest in Michigan, as well as many others.
Upon the completion of the Rampart Range Road, residents of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs placed a bronze plaque on a huge boulder near the Balanced Rock in the Garden of the Gods in honor of Mr. Keithley. The inscription read: "This tablet erected by the community in appreciation of the services of Everard Spencer Keithley, supervisor of the Pike National Forest, whose vision and effort lead to the building of the Rampart Range Road" and was dated 1937.
In 1948, Mr. Keithley was honored with the degree of bachelor of science in forestry from Michigan State College, a degree presented by order of John A. Hannah, president of Michigan State, and dates as of June 24, 1912. Mr. Keithley had transferred from the university of Missouri to Michigan State when he was a junior and because of different regulations at the two schools did not have the necessary credits for a degree at Michigan State althought he had completed the full forestry course there. In the presentation of the degree, it was noted that it was in recognition of 32 years of outstanding accomplishment in the field of forestry, and in tribute of his position (then supervisor of the Pike National Forest) in the forestry profession.
It was also pointed out that Mr. Keithley had served a year after leaving school in the Forest Service at Durango, and had then come to the Pike National Forest as a forest assistant. "His work in that position in reforestation work on the Pikes Peak watershed has been acclaimed by forestry men all over the United States," the speaker at the 1948 dinner said. Among his civic affiliations, Mr. Keithley served as chairman of the Colorado Springs Park and Recreation Advisory Board in 1951, was chairman of the municipal affairs committee of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce, belonged to the Izaak Walton League, the Society of American Foresters, the American Foresters Association, the Federal Employes Union, and the Senior Citizens organization. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Gladys F. Keithley; a son, Joseph F. Keithley of Pueblo: three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
