Mrs. Winifred Maxwell Martin

Winifred Louise Maxwell Martin, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and teacher went to be with Jesus on March 24, 2016, under the loving care of her family, Weaver’s Manor and Gentiva Hospice.
Winifred was a native of Lexington, Georgia and the daughter of the late Edgar James and Winifred Louise Smith Maxwell (Georgia’s Mother of the Year for 1957). She was the third child of seven born into a loving and happy home. In 1938 at the age of sixteen, she graduated from Meson Academy in Lexington, Georgia, a prestigious college preparatory school. Winifred was a 1942 graduate of the University of Georgia (UGA) in Athens, Georgia, at the age of nineteen.
She met her loving husband, William Edward Martin, at UGA. After their marriage, they moved to Screven County to continue farming the Martin Plantation. The couple was blessed with two sons, William Edward Martin, Jr. and Charles Wade Martin.
Winifred pursued her love of teaching and was employed by the Screven County School System, a rewarding career which would last thirty three and a half years. She loved visiting with past students and was always interested in their families and careers.
Upon her retirement from teaching, she and her husband traveled to many states and foreign countries. She never tired of reminiscing of the trips and adventures they shared together. She loved photography and her home was filled with pictures of family members.
Winifred was a devote Christian and until declining health homebound her, she was active in her church and served on various committees. She read extensively and enjoyed trips to Good News Convocations (an evangelical witness and ministry within The United Methodist Church) and to the Billy Graham Training Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Her faith saw her through two bouts with cancer and the ravages of macular degeneration which finally took much of her eyesight.
Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were constantly on her mind and she made every effort to maintain close relationships with each of them. The education of her grandchildren was a top priority for she and her husband, and they provided financial support for the college education of all five grandchildren. In addition, they purchased each one’s first car upon their graduation from high school.
Although the void created by her death cannot be filled, the example she has set by her life will live in others through untold years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania, the Ellis Miller Sunday School class, the Sara Waters Circle, the Retired Educators of Screven County, and the Azalea Garden Club.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-laws, William Edward (Judalyn) Martin, Jr. of North Liberty, Iowa and Charles Wade (Rebecca) Martin of Sylvania, Georgia, and her youngest brother, Dr. David (Diana) Maxwell of Athens, Georgia. She was blessed with five grandchildren, William Edward (Kim) Martin, III, of Coralville, Iowa, Marnie Martin (Oscar) Cedillos of Denver, Colorado, John Wade (Laura) Martin of Watkinsville, Georgia, Jenna Martin (Bryan) Davis of North Liberty, Iowa and Elizabeth Martin (Jeremy) Hill of Wichita, Kansas. In addition, there are thirteen great-grandchildren: Kiah, Willa and Briar Martin; Conner and Isabel Cedillos; Katelyn and William (Liam) Davis; Levi, William and Eliana Martin; and Cecelia, Brennan and Kayla Hill.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, William E. Martin, Sr.; her parents, Edgar and Winifred Maxwell; two brothers, Dr. Edgar J. Maxwell and Robert C. Maxwell; and three sisters, Margaret Ann Polk, Carolyn Bryant and Betty Autry.
Her funeral and the celebration of her life will be held on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 3:00 p.m., at the chapel of Joiner Anderson Funeral Home, Sylvania, Georgia with Rev. Mike Benson and Rev. Ricky Varnell officiating. Visitation will be held immediately prior to the service from 1:30 -3:00 p.m. Pallbearers are William E. Martin III, John Wade Martin, Bryan Davis, George Harwood, Paul Riddle and Ashley Bragg. Honorary pallbearers are Jeremy Ryan Hill, Oscar Cedillos, Dr. David Maxwell, John Faz, members of the Sara Waters Circle, the Ellis Miller Sunday School Class, and the staff of Weaver’s Manor.
The family has designated the First United Methodist Church Soup Kitchen fund (P.O. Box 256 Sylvania, GA) and Gentiva Hospice (1525 Fair Road, Statesboro, Georgia, 30458) for memorial gifts.
