STURGIS - Raymond B. Bucknell, 94, of 512 Mortimer Ave., died Friday in his home. Mr. Bucknell had been co-owner and operator of Bucknell Hardware for 44 years. He was born Oct. 23, 1899, near Burr Oak and lived most of his life in Sturgis and for the past eight years spent winters in Winter Haven, Fla. In February 1923, in married Laura E. Schaeffer. She died November 1985. In June 1986, he married Angell Bixler. She survives with two stepdaughters, Diane Wegner of Sturgis and Priscilla Kaufmann of Issaguah, Wash.; a stepson, David E. Bixler of Alta Loma, Calif.; a brother, Richard R. of Sturgis; several step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He served on the Board of Directors of Sturgis Savings & Loan Association (now Sturgis Federal Savings Bank), as president from 1951 to 1980 and chairman of the board from 1980 to 1988. For the past few years, he served as director emeritus. He trained and raced trotters in Michigan and was well-known on the racing circuit in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Schaeffer-Bucknell Mausoleum. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in Rosenberg-Schipper Funeral Home.
