Grandma Florence was the daughter of Louis Henry Shaffer and Melly Newby Wilson Shaffer. And the sister of Edgar Thomas Schaeffer. It is important to note the spelling of the last name has changed. We find it both ways during many events

She was born in Spring Dale, Leavenworth County, Kansas, this we learned from her diary. From Federal Census records we have learned of their movings. Because the "Schaeffer" family moved to Delaware, Jefferson County, Kansas by June 7, 1880. The "Schaefer" family was then found June 16, 1900 to be living at 207 Fremont Street, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. Now our understanding is that her father was a railroad man. And this kinda fits with how they moved about.

Our next date shows Florence J. Schaeffer getting married to William Orra Wilson on October 16, 1904 at Ft. D.A. Russell, Laramie County, Wyoming, and her parents living in Cheyenne, Laramie County, Wyoming, which is right there too. He father is listed as a railroad man.

On March 6, 1905 her son, Merritt Hampden Wilson, was born in Cheyenne and then her Mother died August 21, 1905, in Cheyenne. They shipped her Mother's body back to be buried at Oakhill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas. How long they stayed in Wyoming after this is unknown. We find the family next in Sutherland, Lincoln County, Nebraska on May 3, 1910. And another son, Everett Hascal Wilson, being born May 25, 1911 here in Sutherland. Now sometime between this time and let's say October 1, 1915, Florence and Orra had a falling out and most likely divorced.

Because on October 16, 1915, Florence Wilson marries Samuel A. Gruber in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas. Though no record shows us, we know she had her boys with her. We know that on April 8, 1917 she gave birth to another son, Harvey Nicholas Gruber, and in an affidavit of birth for Harvey, his brother, Everett Wilson, states he was present when Harvey was born in their home in Kansas City. This new husband was working as a Gardener/Landscaper.

The family is next found January 5, 1920 living in Fort Duchesne, Randlett Precinct, Uintah County, Utah. All three boys are still with her, Merritt and Everett are still going by the surname Wilson. Who knows what happened because we find Florence and the boys living at 24 Panoramic Way, Berkeley, Alameda County, California by 1928, this information comes from a City Directory that was published Jan. 1929. And sure enough on April 15, 1930 they are living at 22 Panoramic Way, Berkeley, Alameda County, California, and Samuel is still not with them. The boys all attended school in Berkeley with Harvey graduating in June 14, 1935 from Berkeley High School. Whether Merritt and Everett did is unknown to me at this time. Grandma Florence continued to live in either unit 22 or 24 till 1933ish when she moved over to 2030 Virginia Street for a short period of time. We find her again back at 22 Panoramic Way by 1935. By 1944 she was living on Otis Street, because this is where they were living when her Grandson Harvey was born, because Harvey and his family were sharing the house with Florence then. Everett was now in the Navy and gone. And who knows where Merritt went. He was missing from all know records till 1947 when he married Eva Jane Quaring, then he disappeared when they had their second child and was never heard of again to our knowledge.

Grandma Florence moved over to Shattuck Avenue by 1961 and 1929 Francisco Street by 1964. After this time she decided to move to Galveston, Hitchcock County, Texas to live with her son, Everett, who was courting his soon to be third/fourth wife, Laura E. Savage. Grandma's health was getting bad and she spent sometime in the hospital, passing away there April 15, 1973, at Galveston County Memorial Hospital from Renal Failure.

She was a Grand Lady, hard to make her appreciate you but truly loved all of her family. She loved to ride in the car, especially her Grandson Harvey's Chevy. Go out to dinner at Spenger's Seafood Grotto. And she loved to cook. Her specialty was "Grunion," Everett would catch the fish in the ocean and she would cook it. She loved to play cards, she was good at Canasta and Poker. She also enjoyed reading. We know she was a member of the "Carrie Nations Society" as one time and she was raised in the Quaker religion but the family has no memory of her attending church. And she had a very strong dislike of "Wild Bill" James Butler Hickok, though she would never say why, just that her family knew him, she would have been three years old when he died. She always said, "He was a back shooting Scoudrel."

She left behind: Three sons, Merritt, Everett and Harvey. Seven Grandchildren: Pattie Mae, Diane, Jack, Gayle, Lynne, Harvey, Marie and Dorothy. Grandson Glenn, proceeded her. Twelve Great Grandchildren: Greg, Bradley, Jack Jr., Eileen, Gail, Joy, Jean, Michelle, Kristi, Christina, Patricia, and Tanya.
