Charmian Kittredge London was an American pianist and writer. She met Jack London in March 1900 and the couple was married in Chicago on November 19, 1905. He was attracted by her being both a virtuoso pianist and an excellent typist. Encouraged by Jack to write, Charmian authored three books: The Log of the Snark, Our Hawaii, and The Book of Jack London. The couple were married for a short 11 years until Jack's death at age 40 in 1916, on their "Beauty Ranch" near Glen Ellen, California. Charmian built "The House of Happy Walls" on the ranch after Jack's death, and lived there until her death in 1955 at age 83. She was cremated and her ashes were placed under a red boulder on the ranch (now Jack London State Historic Park), where Jack's ashes had been placed years before.
