Russell William Arends, the son of Henry and Emma Graves Arends, was born January 10, 1926 in Brookings, South Dakota. He attended school for a short time in Brookings before the family moved to Milford. It was there he continued his schooling, graduating from Okoboji Consolidated School in 1944.

He entered the military in 1944 and was discharged in 1948, after being wounded in action and spending three years in a hospital in El Paso, Texas.

Russell married Alice Hammers on December 1, 1951, in Omaha, Nebraska. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Sutherland where they farmed for five years. They moved to a farm near Primghar in 1957, where they have since resided. He retired from farming in 1982.

They enjoyed fishing and boating, and went to Canada to fish for many years. He was a lifetime member of the DAV.

Mr. Arends passed away at the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Sunday, May 10, 1998 at the age of 72 He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Florence Stykel; and a brother, Kenneth Arends.

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Hartley; six children: [redacted]; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Henry (Hank) Arends of South Sioux City, Nebraska; two sisters: Dorothea-Mrs. Wayne Christofferson and Thelma Eichman, all of St Ansgar, Iowa; five half brothers and sisters: Pat-Mrs. Ed Morisch of Spencer, Diane-Mrs. Glen Nabcr of Washington, Tom and Sheri Arends of Milford, Jim Arends, and Larry and Jan Arends of Spencer, two step brothers: Lawrence Stykel of California and Vernon Stykel of Dallas, Texas; one aunt, Minnie Livingston of Lake Park, Iowa; several nieces and nephew; other relatives and many friends.

Services in memory of Russell William Arends were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 13, 1998 at the Hartley Community Center. Rev. Milo Sheldon officiated. Casket bearers were Scott Arends, Mark Sampson, Craig Sampson, Galen Sampson, Mike Morisch and Mark Schroeder. Military services were conducted by Arthur W. Kirchhoff Post #288, American Legion of Hartley. Interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery of Hartley. Warner Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
