Per her obituary, Emma was the daughter of early-day settlers of Lincoln, Placer County. Her father rode to California from Missouri on horseback in 1852. He mined for gold at first but eventually homesteaded in Lincoln, establishing one of the largest cattle, sheep, and grain ranches in the county. Emma's mother came to California from Missouri in covered wagon with her family in 1851. Emma grew up in Lincoln and on November 25, 1897, in Placer County, she married Morris Frederick, moving to Sacramento that same year. Emma was survived by her daughters Elvetta Grohl and Verna Gottwals, her brothers Henry and Ira Ahart, as well as five grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
