John McLeod was born in PEI in 1795. He immigrated to the US with his family in 1851and was a farmer in Wisconsin until joining the Union Army in 1861. Enlisting in the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteers, he rose through the ranks to Captain. He was a company commander at the end of the war. Returning to Wisconsin, he married Adelia Eliza Savercool.

He and his half brother Alexander Hugh Cameron farmed in Kansas prior to the California gold rush. The two brothers and their wives mined for gold in the Plumas county area and John and Adelia moved to Idaho where they worked with his younger brother James Charles Bernard. John died in 1918 and Adelia in 1909. They are buried in Kohlerlawn Cemetery in Nampa, Idaho

The 1880 census of Prattville shows Arathua sharing the household with her sister Adelia Eliza and two boys..Charles W. Bernard (1872) and James Cameron (1874).

By 1900 they had divorced. They had lived in Prattville, Plumas co. California along with John MacLeod Bernard, his half-brother and Arathusa's sister Adelia.

Adelia Eliza states in her will that Charles W. (1872) is adopted. Is he Arathusa's?. By 1900, the census shows Alex living on his own in Prattville. Arathusa shared a household with her sister Adelia Eliza in Plumas co., California. When Adelia and John Bernard went to Nampa, Arthusa went to live near her sister Adelia Eliza Savercool Bernard and brother-in-Law, Capt. John MacLeod Bernard, in Nampa, Canyon co., Idaho. She d. 29 June 1928, Alameda, Alameda, California.
