Cassie was the only child of William Paul Denckla and his young bride, Johnanna Drennen, who died just after their first anniversary (March 1952). Cassie was on a voyage with her uncle Henry J. Denckla when the SS Golden Gate caught on fire and sank off the coast of Mexico. They were two of the 213 passengers who perished.
