Emmett was the uncle of my sister's husband Alonzo Breon "Tony" Cooke Jr.

Emmett Pernell Cooke, age 94, passed away peacefully March 18, 2015, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Virginia. Born July 22, 1920, in Hampton, Virginia to the late Nettie (Bluford) and Robert Cooke, he lived most of his life in Hampton.

At a young age, he was reared by the satisfield family who played an instrumental part in his life until his transition. A beloved brother, uncle, and friend, Emmett is survived by a sister, Celestine Henderson (Las Vegas, NV), nieces, nephews and close friends.

Emmett was preceded in death by his longtime girlfriend of more than 30 years, Katherine Casey, his God-brother, James, and his siblings Buddy, RF, Geraldine, Hugo and Robert, Jr.

Emmett was an incredibly caring, independent and intelligent man whom in his spare time enjoyed crossword puzzles, word search puzzles, reading, watching sports and classic movies anything to keep his mind sharp.

Emmett is a veteran who spent time in the military and served in World War II, where he earned several medals, including Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with one bronze service star, a good conduct medal and a victory medal. He was a medic in the Army and stationed in Hawaii for 39 months and Okinawa, Japan. He spent time in Fort Monroe, Baltimore, Texas and Washington DC as a Medical NCO.

He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. As a civilian, he often did odd jobs in Hampton to include assisting Hampton University students during move-in days. He also spent many years working for Southern Pacific Railroad. Emmett was very involved and committed to volunteer work with the local Veterans Affairs department.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the members of the James River Convalescent Center. Their dedication and effort to provide Place of Birth: Hampton, VA Death: March 18, 2015 Place of Death: Newport News, VA quality care was a heartwarming blessing to the entire family.

We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 25, 1-6 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 26, 11 am at Ronald C. Perkins Funeral Home.
