Joesph W. Cummings died on May 23, 1897 at his home in Davis City, Iowa. He was born in Decatur County, Iowa April 14, 1860. In 1880 he married Miss Elizabeth Sexton, who with her infant son, died a little more than a year later. On June 17, 1883, he marrried Miss Ida B. Bullington, who with their four children, survives him, as also his father and mother, now growing aged. He bore an excellent reputation as a business man and neighbor, and bore his long sickness and suffering with Christian fortitude. He was buried on Monday afternoon by the Odd Fellows of Davis City, assisted by the Rebekah Degree Lodge and delegation from the lodges at Leon and Lamoni. Rev. Mitchell delivered the funeral address and the beautiful burial service of the Lodge was recited at the grave. Mr. Cummings, was widely known and respected, and his funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Davis City. His sorrowing family have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
