James Monroe Haynes was born 26 September, 1920, in Stoddard, Missouri. He was the first of five children born to Henry Nelson and Stella May Cartwright Haynes. By the age of 10 his family had moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where he was to live the rest of his life.

On July 21, 1945, Jim and Alma Mae Newell were united in marriage by the Rev. H. H. McGinty of First Baptist Church of Cape Girardeau.

As a young man, Jim worked for Kimbel Truck Lines. He was appointed the first Auditor for Cape Girardeau County by Governor Warren E. Hearnes. He later worked for the Missouri State Auditor's office.

Jim and Alma raised two sons and were active in the Democratic Party at both the County and State levels their entire lives. Fishing was a passion for both, as was travel along with the enjoyment of their three grandchildren

Jim died on 24 May, 1997, in Cape Girardeau. He is buried next to his loving wife, below her parents, in Cape County Memorial Cemetery.
