Giovanni Battista Cappellari was born in Berti, near Conco Italy. He was the son of Marco Cappellari and Maria Cortese. In October 1916 Giovanni Battista Cappellari was a soldier at Mount Pasubio when he was given a 30 day pass. He was in the front lines and was unable to safely leave to go home. On the third day of his pass he looked over the edge of a trench to see if it was clear for him to finally go when an Austrian soldier shot him in the head and he died. He was 30 years old. He left behind seven sisters and one brother. He was the oldest in the family and had been caring for them after both parents died in 1907. He was named after John the Baptist.
