Herbert Wilson Goss, 81, of Tyrone, PA, a lifelong door-to-door salesman, made his last call Saturday. He was born at home in East Juniata, Altoona, the son of the late Russell and Elizabeth (Miller) Goss. On August 15, 1953, in North Carolina he married Patricia Ann Heagy of Harrisburg, who preceded him in death June 23, 1992.
Surviving are six children: Deborah (Larry) Crowell of Dublin, OH; Connie (Vincent) Bungo of Boynton Beach, FL; Marjorie (Donnie) Shultz of Tyrone; Darlene (Larry) Bailey of Warriors Mark; John R. Goss and William (Angela) Goss, both of Tyrone; 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister Shirley Goss Sanders, and his lifelong best friend and cousin, Eugene Montgomery, the big brother he never had.
He spent his early years in a South Harrisburg area known as "Shipoke". His outgoing personality emerged early in his school years, when he was elected president of the student council and captain of the "Patrol Boys". An athlete, he earned varsity letters in baseball, track and football. He was an accomplished amateur boxer and a parade drummer. He was a 1953 graduate of John Harris High School, Harrisburg and was voted "Best Groomed Male" by his classmates. Herb was the starting third baseman for the Harrisburg American Legion All-Stars and later played for the 104th Cavalry National Guard team in Harrisburg and the Latsha Lumber team in the Harrisburg Twilite League. His team mates called him "Scoopes".
He operated his own business, Baby Care Guild of Harrisburg, where he sold Baby Butler safety feeding chairs. In the early 60's he moved his family to Tyrone, where he drove school buses for the Tyrone Area School District. He often treated his young passengers to a bag of goodies on Valentine's Day. He loved driving the Little League teams and coaches to Pirates baseball games at Three Rivers Stadium. He was a Pennsylvania licensed insurance agent, and a graduate of the life Underwriters Training Counsel.
An avid golfer, he competed in various tournaments, even scoring a hole-in-one in private play. A longtime Moose member, he established and personally funded golf tournaments while serving as the District 10 Sports Chairman in the 70's. He formed a four man 'Scramble' team at Park Hill's Country Club in Altoona, PA. They won the "Olds Scramble" in 1987 at Park Hills and then traveled to Pittsburgh to compete in Regional competition where they finished in third place in a field of fifteen groups. He was a social member of Tyrone American Legion and a past member of the Elks Lodge. Additionally, he was the author of a novel, "Geese Still Fly," published in 2004 under his pen name, "Trebreh Ssog".
He was a Lutheran by faith and took care to instill his family with that faith. Herb was known for his humor, wit and had a larger-than-life personality, describing his life in the lyrics of Frank Sinatra's hit song "My Way".
Friends will be received from 6-8pm Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at Derman Funeral Home Inc., Tyrone, where a service will be held at 2pm Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016, The Rev. Larry A. Crowell officiating. Private interment will be held at Logan Valley Cemetery, Bellwood, PA.
