"The death of Stephen Henry Cooper, an aged and highly respected citizen of the town of Middlefield, occurred at his home near Middlefield Center, Tuesday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock. Mr. Cooper had been in failing health for the past three or four years but had been confined to his bed only for the past ten days. On Monday of last week he suffered a shock and death was ascribed to that seizure together with other complications incident to advanced years. Mr. Cooper was the eldest of five children of Jacob and Mary (Judson) Cooper and was born at Middlefield Center September 22, 1855. His entire life with the exception of thirteen years when he and his wife lived in the town of Springfield was spent in the neighborhood in which he died ... February 22, 1876, Mr. Cooper was united in marriage with Miss Eleanor Barrett of Fergusonville, who survives together with one son, George W. Cooper of Cooperstown. A daughter, Mrs. Ida Hayner, passed away in Rome, February 4, 1931. There are also surviving five grandchildren, two great grandchildren; a brother, Albert Cooper of Hudson, and a sister, Mrs. Effie Burch of Cooperstown, together with a number of more distant relatives. The funeral was held from the home Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Dr. Edward C. Petrie, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Cooperstown officiating, and burial was made in the family plot at the Hartwick Seminary cemetery."
