The family had moved to Wisconsin by 1860, and Edward is recorded there in every census up to and including 1880. He was recorded as a student at the University of Wisconsin in 1871, and as a printer in 1870 and 1880.
He married Annie Holmes in Mound City Illinois 15 November 1875.

In 1900 Edward was recorded as an editor, in Kankakee City Illinois, and by 1910 he had moved to St Louis, where he was working as a book keeper for a stationery company.
He died in St Louis of acute pneumonia 20 October 1935, one month short of his 86th birthday. He was cremated 23rd October at Valhalla Crematory, St Louis, Missouri and his ashes were returned to the funeral home
