James Franklin Bethel was the youngest of the seven children of William Henry Bethel and Caroline Matilda Mott. He was born July 17, 1849 in Key West. His father was a master mariner, a wrecker who worked out of Indian Key Harbour and Key West.
Before he was ten years old, Frank's father moved the family to Indian Key, where he served as Inspector of Customs. There were only two families living on Indian Key at that time so no opportunity for Frank to go to school, but he could read and write. All of the men on the island were mariners - his father, his Uncle William Mott, his sister's husband Edward Bell, and their neighbor John Curry. By the time Frank was grown, he had decided against a life on the sea but had been working as a ships carpenter, and eventually would become a master craftsman. He was an artist.
Frank married about 1875, possibly a woman named Caroline, but probably Charity Pinder. Charity was one of his neighbors who lived with her parents and two sisters on Indian Key. John Pinder and his wife Sarah Elizabeth Russell and their three daughters, Emma, Charity, and Amelia, were one of the nine households on Indian Key at that time.
By 1880, Frank had moved to Manatee County, Florida, near his sister Mary Ann Fogarty and had two sons, Harry and Roland. By 1885, Frank and Charity were living on Fleming Street in Key West and had four young sons: Harry, Roland, Ralph, and James. Over the next 18 years, they moved back to the west coast of Florida and would have five more children: Harlan, Emma, Mary, Lottie, and John.
By 1900, the family had settled in Tampa, 158 W. 10th Avenue, Frank was working as a ship carpenter, and five of their six children were living at home with them. In 1920, Frank and Charity lived alone on Russell Street, but in 1930, they were living at 2912 Hawthorn and their youngest son, John, was living with them, as was his sister Emma, her Canadian husband George St Laurent, and their daughter Emma Marie. George and Emma were trapeze artists. Their daughter Emma Marie was born in Australia while they were on tour.
By 1935, Frank and Charity's son John was still living at home with them and doing farm labor. Frank was 85 at that time, but lived to be 90 years old, dying October 28, 1939. He was buried October 31, 1939, in Fogartyville Cemetery, where his sister Mary Ann Bethel Fogarty was buried. He had long outlived all of his siblings.
