Arliss (Tucker) Artman formerly of Pittsfield, Illinois, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2018 in Lakeland, Florida where she resided for the past three years. Arliss was born on July 19, 1927 in Griggsville, Illinois. She was the only child of James and Mary (Franklin) Tucker. She resided with her loving Grandparents James and Otta Tucker.
In 1944, she was voted the first Griggsville Apple Queen. She graduated salutatorian from Griggsville High School in 1945. After high school she attended Western Illinois University and received a war-time teacher certificate. She taught in Griggsville and country school for three years.
Arliss married her childhood sweetheart Gerry Godfrey on October 19, 1946 and were married until his death in 1981. They lived in Griggsville and the country west of Pittsfield with their three daughters Linda Smith, Susan Moses and Joan Benz. The couple's first child Nancy Lyn died in infancy in 1949.
Arliss was a homemaker and the bookkeeper for Gerry's business Godfrey Auto Body Shop. They enjoyed family road trips to history sites and spending Sundays and holidays with their families. As parents they encouraged their daughters to participate in their community, in band, Girl Scouts and advanced education.
Arliss' unique name, after actor George Arliss , was suggested by the doctor who delivered her. She loved life. She loved people, every person she crossed paths with became her friend. She shared stories about her children and grandchildren, her travels, flowers, books and food. She was a Girl Scout as a girl and a leader of Troop 10, Camp Burns and Camp Saukanuk unit leader and board member as an adult. Arliss loved nature and always saw its beauty. Each Girl Scout became an honorary daughter.
Arliss led a life of service to her community and served as an officer of numerous organizations: the Pittsfield Library Board, Home Extension, Sorosis, Knitting Club, Garden Club, Interested Mother's Club (IMC), Old Orchard Country Club, Girl Scouts Board, and Twin Orchard Country Club. She was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church, a Sunday School teacher and Madonna Circle. Arliss loved to bowl and travel to tournaments with her Bowling League teammates.
Arliss worked as a bookkeeper for 22 years at Bergman's Meat Packing Co., where she had many friends.
On January 9, 1987 she married Dr. H. Dean Artman an Optometrist. Dean and Arliss enjoyed their retirement years traveling many places including the Cayman Islands, England and numerous trips to Las Vegas. The couple was married until his death in 2008.
Arliss enjoyed traveling with daughter Joan and her children on road trips and visits to Linda's family in North Carolina, Texas Michigan and Florida. Arliss spent the last three years in Lakeland, Florida with Linda.
She enjoyed visiting daughter Susan and her family in Chicago, riding the train downtown, going to the Art Institute and shopping.
Preceding her in death was her husband Gerry Godfrey, a daughter Nancy Lyn Godfrey, her parents James and Mary Tucker (Claus) and her husband Dr. H. Dean Artman.
Arliss is survived by her daughters Linda (Richard) Smith, Susan (Michael) Moses and Joan (Don) Benz, a step-daughter Barbee (Ken) Swofford and a step-son Eric Artman, seven grandchildren whom she considered to be her crown jewels: Sarah Moses, Jennifer (Todd) Vancil, Katie Smith, Mark Moses, Harrison (Amanda) Graham, Jackie (Ben) Rollins and Andrew (Hanni) Moses. Arliss was blessed to have nine great grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Kai Wieschowski, Ava Graham, Isaac Wieschowski, Austin Wieschowski, Tyler Graham, Finn Rollins, Joseph Moses and Nathan Moses.
The family is grateful to the staff of Brookdale Clare Bridge Center and VITAS Hospice of Lakeland, Florida for their kind care and they will miss her pretty singing voice.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 2, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Pittsfield United Methodist Church with Reverend Tom Wilbur officiating. Burial will be at the Griggsville Cemetery. There will be a visitation on Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield.
