According to the book "Families of Ancient New Haven" by Donald Lines Jacobus, he was the son of James (1671-1736) and Abigail Bennett Bishop (c1671-1761. Their other children were: Elizabeth b 1696, Mary b 1698, Rebecca b 1703, Abigail b 1707, Ruth b 1709, and son Joy b 1711, married to Miriam daughter of John & Elizabeth (Hayward) Perkins.

He married Elizabeth Clinton (not Perkins), daughter of Lawrence Clinton and Mary (Brocket) Clinton. Elizabeth Perkins married James's first cousin also named James. His parents were John Bishop and Abigail (Willett) Bishop

Their children were: Elizabeth, Amos, James b 7 Jun 1733, David, (perhaps) Mary, and Abel.
