Mrs. Decker was the wife of Harris Lewis Decker, Frederick's local historian for two administrations, who died January 8, 2000 at the age of 88. They were married September 7, 1962 and had no children.

Mrs. Decker, 88, had a long career in the business communities of Maryland. She began her career after graduating from Frederick High School in 1934. While in high school and after graduation, she became a legal secretary to Mr. Clinton W. McSherry, an attorney at law in Frederick City. Mrs. Decker supplemented her education throughout life, taking business courses at Hood College and the University of Baltimore, studying business, the arts, and music and in 1941 completed the commercial law course at the American Institute of banking. In 1950, she earned her first real estate broker's license while employed by Hamilton Homes.

Mrs. Decker was an avid explorer in the pursuit of life, experiencing learning, traveling, active in community organizations, teaching, selling, golfing, painting, bridge, entertaining and even riding a camel in Egypt. Most of her life was dedicated to her husband, nieces, nephews, brothers, sister and her community. She took great pride and satisfaction in her 35 year real estate career. She was a kind and honest woman, who touched many lives with love.

Mrs. Decker's business life was her career life. Her vast knowledge and experience grew through the years and she was respected and loved by all. She began in 1934 through 1942 with the Peoples Liquidating Corp. and then advanced in 1942 with Western Maryland Trust Company as manager of the Mortgage Department specializing in FHA and V.A. loans. In 1941, she became the first woman bank officer in Frederick. She became an officer of Hamilton Homes as executive secretary from 1946 through 1954 for president, Asa H. Watkins. She assisted in the development of Watkins Acres, a 53-unit apartment project in Frederick and 165 homes at Hamilton Park and 63 units at Long Meadow Apartments in Hagerstown.

To further her career and education, she moved to Baltimore when offered a position in Aberdeen, Md., there she managed a 796 unit apartment complex, Chesapeake Gardens, owned by the Henry Knott Company from 1955-1960, while still continuing her education at the University of Baltimore. Upon her return to Frederick in 1960, she took a position as a technical editor for Aerojet General Corp. She joined her brother's firm, Baker Kefauver Realty, Inc. in 1965 and obtained her real estate broker's license. After a number of years selling residential real estate, she formed her own real estate company in 1982, Decker Realty, Inc. and continued in real estate management and sales in Frederick until her retirement at 80 years of age in 1997 and gave up her license in 2001 at age 84.

Mrs. Decker belonged to the Junior Civil Club as secretary in 1941, a club formed in 1938 in response to the need for "Endeavor" on the part of young women in Frederick interested in learning how business was run and how they figured n the life of the city. She became the youngest member of the distinguished Zonta organization and later became president of Frederick's Zonta Club in 1951. She served as a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary as chairman of fundraising committee. During World War II, she was an active member of the Red Cross Motor Corps and taught Red Cross first aid classes. Concern for one's duties, she joined the Catoctin Women's Rifle Club to be prepared in case of duty.

Mrs. Decker was a life member of the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of the Frederick County Landmarks Foundation for four years, member of the Jeanne Bussard workshop Auxiliary and a member of the Casual Garden Club.

Mrs. Decker belonged to the Real Estate Boards of Frederick County, State of Maryland and the National Board of Realtors. She was the recipient of many awards by the local board and the Frederick Multiple Listing Service as an annual million dollar producer received the original Million Dollar Round Table Award, Hall of Fame Award and was the second woman ever awarded the "Distinguished Service" award in 1992.

Mrs. Decker created a memorial to her late husband in 2002, the Harry Decker Historical Essay Contest for young students. They were encouraged to conduct research and create an original essay on a topic relating to Frederick County history.

Mrs. Decker was an avid golfer. She and her husband were on of the first members of Holly Hills Country Club. They traveled extensively playing golf on over 100 courses in the United States and eventually on famous courses in Scotland. Both she and her husband were noted for their skill of multiple "hole in one" shots. She was the first woman to score a hole in one shot at VFW Country Club - a 145 yard drive for the ladies. For annual pro-member tournament, she was being the pro against three men, her husband, Harry being one. The second time around, the nine-hole course, she came within a yard of sinking another ace on the same hole. She will be remembered lovingly by her family and friends, for whom she did so much.

She was a life long member of the Evangelical Reformed Church on West Second Street in Frederick and was active in the church activities and committees. Singing in the choir was her greatest gift for 13 years.
