William F. "Bill" McCreary, 90, passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2016 in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Franklin. He was born in Indianapolis to Alfred McCreary and "Lilly" Mae (Denny) McCreary Hobbs. He was married to Bernie (Hopper) McCreary, for 33 years. He worked, as a line inspector, for Linkbelt (FMC), in Indianapolis, for 35 years. He was a World War II Army veteran and a POW. William served as a past Commander of the Dav, Greenwood chapter, a member of the VFW, American Legion, and a past President of the Eagles. He also served as a past President of People to People, a Cub Scout Leader, and was one of the first volunteer firefighters for the White River Township Fire Department.
He enjoyed collecting model cars, German steins and lighthouses. He also liked fishing and going dancing.
He is survived by three grandchildren, Nannette Legan Morrison,(Ronnie), Byron A. Legan and Taylor E. McCreary; nine great grandchildren, Kenneth William, Victoria, Vannessa, Byron Jr., Courtney, Gloria, bo, Brice, Angel; two great-great grandchildren, Nayomee and Braxton; a niece, Cindy Fee; three great nieces, Amy, Darlene and Olivia, and one great nephew, Bradley.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a son, Gary A. McCreary, three brothers, Alfred "Bud" McCreary II, Don Drumm, Don Cunningham, and one sister: Dorothy Cunningham
funeral service with military honors will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 N. U.S. 31. Calling will be from 1 p.m. to service time at the funeral home. A graveside service will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greenwood at a later date.
