Mary Ann Goodrich (1803-1871) was born in Glastonbury CT, the daughter of Jeremiah Goodrich (1772-1824) and Jemima Tryon (1779-1819). She married Silas Goodrich, a distant cousin, and moved to rural Tioga County, NY in the 1820's. She and Silas raised seven children, all but one reaching adulthood, that being Rachel Tryon Goodrich who died at age 14. She and Silas also had the agonizing experience of seeing two of their three sons serve on opposite sides of the U.S. Civil War. One son, James, served with the 5th (U.S.) Kansas Cavalry and the other son, Ralph, served with the 6th (Confederate) Arkansas Infantry. Both sons survived the war. Another daughter, Augusta, married a Methodist minister, settled in Kansas Territory in the mid-1850's, and endured the Bleeding Kansas atrocities that led up to the Civil War.
