SERVICES HELD FOR SARAH JANE COOK, 69.
Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov 4, 1949 for Sarah Jane Cook, 69, by Richard D. Rust, member of the bishopric in the Third LDS Ward Chapel at 2:00 PM. She died November 1, 1949 after a lingering illness.
Prayer at the home was offered by Warren Mott; prelude Mrs. Arthur Schaefermeyer, words of thanks and apperciation in behalf of the family, Mr Rust, Third Ward double quartet, "Sometime We'll Understand", invocation, William Mott Sr.; solo "Goin Home", May Jorgensen; speakers, Bishop Austin Wardle of Leota and H. Walter Wooley; Duet "The Garden of Tomorrow," Lois Erickson and Marva Sorenson, accompanied by Mrs. Arthur Manwaring; double quartet, "Softly and Tenderly:; benediction, Phill Watkins; dedication of the grave, Austin Wardle.
Pallbearers were six grandsons, Larry Spiers, Elmer Meadows, Warren Mott, Acel Miller, Frank Vilaret and Lloyd Hatch, Services were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
Mrs. Cook was born January 5, 1880, at Big Cottonwood, Salt Lake County, a daughter of Charles and Martha Haslem Holmes and was one of 13 children. Comming to Uintah Countyat the age of five she settled with her parents on Ashley Creek, then moving to Pleasant Grove at the age of 14. At the age of 18 she married Charles Meadows and became the mother of three children, two of whom are living, Charles A. Meadows, Salt Lake City and Mrs Abram Hatch, Vernal.
In 1930 she married Ruben Cook, helping to manage a cafe here before they moved to Willow Creek where they owned a ranch and made their home for the last 14 years.
The Cooks helped to build Willow Creek and won many friends amoung the indians as well as the white people. Mr. Cook preceded his wife in death seven years. Mrs. Cook was noted for her giving, never turning anyone away from her home or cafe, if they had money to pay for the meal or not. A member of the LDS Church, Mrs. Cook was active in the Relief Society as well as Civic organizations.
Survivors of the 69 year old pioneer include 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. George Holmes, Nampa, Idaho; Charles and William Holmes, Vernal; Mrs. Bart Mowrey, Seattle, Washington; and Mrs. Carrie Harnish, Los Angeles, California. Both sisters were here to attend the funeral services.
Her father Charles HOLMES Sr. at age 17 and his family came to Utah with the Thomas E. Ricks Company in 1866.
