Son of William and Parthena Labaree. He worked in woolen mills when young and came to Springfield, VT in 1849 and worked for Holmes and Whitmore. In 1853 he bought a grocery business which he ran for many years. He removed to New Hampshire and later Webster, MA. He married Alzina M. Royce on 2 Nov 1852 and they had Ada, Ella, and Charles.
