Enlisted in the 1st TN Inf Co. D as the 2nd Sergeant. Was later promoted to 3rd Lt. at the company's reorganization April 30, 1862. He was severely wounded in the left leg at the Battle of Perryville, KY, Oct. 8 1862, and sent to Lebanon, KY. Thomas was apparently captured while in the hospital and exchanged on November 15, 1862, at Vicksburg, MS. On April 22, 1863, a medical examination board declared him unfit for duty and he resigned his commission. On August 25, 1863, he was arrested by the Federal Garrison in Franklin when he returned home, but was released on bond. Thomas married Sallie L. Morton on Aug. 31, 1864, in Williamson Co. He lived off what is now Carl Road in Leipers Fork.
